Arabic dance, known in the West as belly or oriental dance, is generally a dance for women. It may not be so formal to refer to this type of belly dance as this type of dance because most parts of the body are used in this type of dance and the most important movements of this dance are the hip movements.

The date of origin and the native place of this dance are unknown. The documents that refer to this type of dance are mostly related to the last two centuries. Some have linked it to the dance of gypsy women and special dancers in the court of the Safavid kings, and others to the court of the Ottoman kings in Egypt. In the harems of the Safavid period, there were also mugs and special dancers inside the shrine.
