Satyajit Ray (2 May 1921 - 23 April 1992) was an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, art director, music director and writer. He is regarded as one of the best filmmakers of the twentieth century. [3] [4] [5] His ancestral home was in the village of Masua in the Katiadi upazila of Kishoreganj (now Bangladesh) in the then British India. He studied at Presidency College, Calcutta and at Visva-Bharati University, founded by Rabindranath Tagore at Santiniketan. Although Ray's career began as a commercial painter, he was inspired to make the film after first meeting French filmmaker Jean Ranoir in Calcutta and then on a tour of London to watch the Italian neo-realist film Ladri di Biciclette (Italian: Ladri di biciclette, Bicycle Thief).
