Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born 25 December 1924)[1] is an Indian politician who twice served as the Prime Minister of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996, and then from 1998 to 2004. He was a member of the Indian Parliament for over four decades, being elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house, ten times, and twice to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house.

He served as the Bhartiya Janta Party BJP's Member of Parliament for Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh until 2009 when he retired from active politics due to health concerns. He was conferred India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by the President of India in 2014.[2] It was declared by the Modi government in 2014 that Bajpai's birthday, 25 December, would be marked as Good Governance Day
