Motorcycles:
BMW started the production of motorcycle engines, and then motorcycles after the First World War. Brand of motorcycles is now known as BMW Motorrad. Their first successful motorcycle after the unsuccessful Helios and Flink, was the "R32" in 1923, although production initially began in 1921. It was a “double” engine, in which the cylinder juts out into the air stream from each side of the machine. In addition to their single cylinder models, all their motorcycles used this distinctive layout until the early 1980s. Many BMWs are still manufactured in this layout, which is referred to as the R Series.
M Power:
BMW M, “M” (Motorsport) produces sports improvements to its cars with the “M” index, developed by their subsidiary BMW M GmbH (formerly BMW Motorsport GmbH). It was originally created to promote the BMW racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. Over time, BMW M began to replenish the BMW car portfolio with specially modified models with higher trim, for which they are now best known to the general public. These cars under the brand M traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, trim, aerodynamics and body modifications to distinguish them from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at a BMW privately held company on the Nürburgring race track in Germany. BMW M also remains the only performance-based company that also serves motorcycles, in particular the BMW S1000RR.
Plug-in electric cars:
BMW I is a BMW sub-brand, founded in 2011 to design and manufacture hybrid electric vehicles. The initial plans for the sub-brand included the release of two cars; Serial production of a fully electric BMW i3 car began in September 2013, and market entry took place in November 2013 with the first retail supplies in Germany. The BMW i8 sports hybrid car was released in Germany in June 2014.
Wheel styles:
Since the beginning of its existence, BMW has created more than 400 types of wheels for their cars.
