About Canto del Nictibio Urutaú
Song of the Nictibius Urutaú (Nyctibius griseus)
The urutaú nictibio (Nyctibius griseus), also called nictibio, guajojó, perosna, common urutaú, ghost bird, northern biparadox, cacuy or Kakuy, minor stake bird or common stake bird, is a species of caprimulgiformes bird of the Nyctibiidae family found in Central and South America, from Nicaragua to the north and northeast of Argentina.
It is a sedentary species that lives in open forests and savannahs. A single, spotted, lilac-white egg is laid directly into a depression in a branch or tree stump.
The lesser urutaú is a close relative of the nightjars (caprimúlgidos), but like the other urutaúes (family Nyctibiidae or nictibidos) it lacks the vibrissae or bristles around the mouth present in the caprimulgidos. It is 33 to 38 cm in total length and is pale grayish to brown, finely streaked with black. It has orange or yellow eyes, large.
This nocturnal insectivore hunts from a perch or elevated position like a shrike or flycatcher. It spends the day perched upright on a tree stump, with which it blends in as if it were part of it.
The lesser urutaú can be located at night by the reflection of light from its yellow eyes or by its persistent melancholy cry, like a human wail, which decreases in intensity and volume.
