Data Eraser - Shredder

Data Eraser permanently shreds files, folders and free storage space so that

deleted data becomes extremely difficult to recover.

When you delete a file normally, Android only removes its directory entry — the

actual bytes stay on storage until something happens to overwrite them, and free

"undelete" tools can often bring them back. Data Eraser closes that gap: it

overwrites the file's contents with sanitization patterns before deleting it,

then truncates it to zero and renames it to a random name so neither the data

nor the filename survives.

◆ WIPE FREE SPACE

Files you deleted before installing Data Eraser may still linger in free

storage. The free-space wiper fills unused storage with random data and then

removes the filler, overwriting the remains of previously deleted files. Your

existing files are never touched.

Deleting a photo often leaves the gallery entry and cached thumbnails behind.

Data Eraser also removes the file's entry from the system media database so it

stops appearing in Gallery and file managers. On Android 9 and older it shreds

the cached thumbnail files too, using the same overwrite algorithm you chose.

HONEST NOTE ON FLASH STORAGE

Phones use flash storage whose controllers may internally remap data blocks

(wear-leveling). Overwriting therefore makes recovery extremely difficult with

software tools, but no app can guarantee that every physical trace is gone.

For maximum protection before selling a device, combine Data Eraser with

full-disk encryption (on by default since Android 7) and a factory reset.

WHAT DATA ERASER CANNOT REACH

Data Eraser shreds the file you select, its gallery entry and — on Android 9 and

older — its cached thumbnails. It cannot reach copies that live outside its

access: backups already synced to Google Photos, Drive or another cloud; copies

other apps saved in their own private storage (messaging apps keep their own);

or copies on another device. From Android 10 the system thumbnail cache moved

into protected storage that no installed app can open, so there Data Eraser

removes the media-database entry rather than overwriting the cached image.

If a file mattered enough to shred, check your cloud backups too.
