When making backup to Phone storage, backup location by default will probably be the internal app storage. You can change backup location to external storage in the app Settings.

It is also recommended to create backup to Google Drive. This will preserve your backup data even if you uninstall the app.

Read your contacts / Modify your contacts

- This permission is needed backup and restore your Contacts

Read your text messages (SMS or MMS) / Edit your text messages (SMS or MMS) / Receive text messages (SMS)

- This permission is needed to backup and restore your SMS messages and to receive SMS message while restore process is running.

Read calendar events plus confidential information / Add or modify calendar events and send email to guests without owners' knowledge

- This permission is needed to backup and restore your Calendar events

Read call log / Write call log

- This permission is needed to backup and restore your call log entries

Read the contents of your USB storage / Modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

- This permission is needed to write backup to your Phone storage / USB storage

Notice:

- Essential Backup cannot backup and restore application data or settings of the apps. It can backup and restore APK files only.
