Contacts are preserved in VCF file format.

SMS, Call log and Calendar events are preserved in JSON file format.

Backup consists of those files that are inside a zip archive and you can easily read those files in your phone or computer!

Default backup location will probably be the internal storage and not the external storage. This is because the phone reports the storage that way. You can change backup location to external storage in the app Settings.

Essential Backup does not require root to perform backup and restore operations.
