About High Frequency Sound

Play any tone from 20 Hz to 22 kHz and find out how high you can still hear.

Every frequency your phone can actually produce, from a 20 Hz rumble to a 22 kHz tone almost nobody can hear.

High Frequency Sound is a precise tone generator and a hearing test in one. Set an exact frequency, watch it on the live trace, and read what that frequency really is: which band it sits in, its nearest musical note, its wavelength in air, and roughly who can still hear it.

TONE GENERATOR

• Full range from 20 Hz up to the highest tone your device can reproduce accurately, usually 22 kHz

• Sine, square, triangle and sawtooth, each built harmonic by harmonic so nothing folds back into buzz at the top end

• A logarithmic slider for sweeping, fine step buttons for nudging, or type the exact number you need

• A live scrolling trace that tightens and shifts tint as you climb the spectrum

• One tap to loop a tone for as long as you want it running

Presets worth hearing: the 17.4 kHz mosquito tone, the near ultrasonic band used by shop doorway alarms and pest deterrent devices, the 15,734 Hz whine of an old CRT television, a dog whistle pitch above human hearing, a common tinnitus ringing pitch, and concert A at 440 Hz.

HEARING TEST

A series of tones, each one higher than the last, starting at 8 kHz. Tap yes while you can still hear something, and no the moment it goes silent. Where you stop is your threshold.

• Your result in Hz, plus the age range that result is typical of

• A tone by tone breakdown of exactly what you heard and what you did not

• Replay any tone as many times as you like before answering

• Share your result if you want to compare with someone

YOUR RESULTS OVER TIME

Every test is saved with the volume it was taken at, because a threshold means nothing without one. See your best result, your latest, and whether your top end is holding steady. Delete anything you do not want to keep.

BUILT TO BE ACCURATE

• Audio is rendered at your device's own output rate, so a 19 kHz tone really is 19 kHz and not a resampled approximation of one

• Waveforms are band limited, which is why a square wave at 15 kHz stays a clean tone instead of turning into noise

• Tones fade in and out rather than clicking

• The app tells you honestly when your device cannot reach the top of the range

• Playback stops the moment a call or another app needs the speaker

PRIVATE AND OFFLINE

No account, no sign in, no internet connection and no permissions requested. Nothing you do here leaves your phone. Your results are stored on the device and are yours to delete.

ABOUT YOUR EARS AND YOUR GEAR

Phone speakers roll off badly at the very top of the range, so headphones give a truer reading. Set a comfortable volume before you start and leave it there for the whole test, because changing it partway makes the result meaningless.

High frequencies at high volume can damage hearing. Turn it down the moment anything feels uncomfortable, and keep sessions short.

The hearing test is a rough guide based on widely quoted age related thresholds, not clinical audiometry. It is a good way to find where your top end sits and to watch whether it moves over time. It is not a diagnosis and it cannot replace a proper hearing check. If you are worried about your hearing, see a professional.

WHO IT IS FOR

Musicians and engineers checking a room, a driver or a pair of headphones. Students working through acoustics. Anyone curious about where their own hearing gives out, or who wants to hear a mosquito tone properly. Anyone who has ever wondered what 18 kHz actually sounds like.

One app, the whole audible spectrum, and an honest answer about how much of it you can still hear.
