The Karo tribe is a Karo plateau tribe and also some parts of North Sumatra to parts of Aceh. The language used is Karo Language or Proficient Karo and also has its own script. Karo traditional clothing is dominated by red and black and filled with gold jewelry. The Karo tribe is the first original tribe of Medan City because Medan City was founded by a Karo son named Guru Patimpus Sembiring Pelawi.

The Kingdom of Haru-Karo (Aru Kingdom) was a very famous Karo occupation in the 1st century AD whose king was named "Pa Lagan". The Haru-Karo Kingdom grew and developed in conjunction with the Majapahit kingdom, Srivijaya, Johor, Malacca and Aceh. Evidenced by the war between the kingdoms. Haru Kingdom in its golden age, had an area from Aceh Besar to the Siak river in Riau.

Merga in the Karo community consists of five groups, which are called merga silima. The five merga are:
