The Tamil Nadu Medical Council is a statutory body formed under the provisions of the Madras Medical Registration Act of 1914. On 12th May,1914, the Madras Medical Council was started before the First World War by the then Governor-General for the Madras Presidency.

The Tamil Nadu Medical Council has functioned as the state unit of the Medical Council of India (MCI) since 1956 based on the Indian Medical Council Act 1956. (the MCI was formed in 1936). The state medical councils do all the work of MCI except medical education.
