About Sonvi
Application for the capture and classification of sounds and images.
SONVI (SONoro / VIsual) is a project created by the academic body "Art, Technology and Contemporary Society" (UABC-CA-281), Faculty of Arts of the Autonomous University of Baja California, Ensenada campus. This application was started by Álvaro Díaz, Miguel Coronado, Pedro Mota and Gerardo Méndez, and recently Cristian Bañuelos has been integrated.
The purpose of this application is the capture and classification of sounds and images, to create sound and visual maps, in which various cartographies can be generated, based on the information collected; it will also serve as a repository of the visual sound memory of each space.
The project started with the initial question: What did my neighborhood sound like when I was a child? Although, the visual environment can be reconstructed with ease through photographs or videos, it is more difficult to build the sound memory; hence the need to design and create this SONVI application, which collects and classifies sound-visual data, through the sound recording and image in an Android application, which are located on a map, through a "point" , and classified through categories created for the application, indicating the date and time of the event, as well as its exact location, being able to consult at any time.
The second stage of this SONVI project is the creation of a virtual platform, which has a playful and artistic section; where the cybernaut will be able to carry out two main activities: the first, the consultation of the information gathered in the app, through thematic searches; and the second, to activate the work of art, proposed from technology, managing to concentrate and show the visual sound memory of its environment, transforming it into a new reality.
The project is currently in the third stage, which is the data collection in the border entity Mexico / USA, to perform an analysis and preservation of the information collected. We consider that this project, in addition to containing and disclosing the sound-visual data and classifications previously gathered in the application, creates an understanding of the environment that is inhabited; managing to preserve and show the visual sound memory, transforming it into a new artistic reality.
This project is supported by the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC), Secretariat of Public Education through the Program for Professional Teacher Development (PRODEP), Secretary of Culture and National Autonomous University of Mexico through the program Art, Science and Technology (ACT) in the call 2018-2019, and the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT).
