Star Battle can be classified as an object placement puzzle, like Battleship or Trees and Tents, and as binary determination puzzle, like Hitori or Nurikabe. Users often refer to it as a interesting cross between Sudoku and Minesweeper.

Star Battle is relatively new, created by Hans Eendebak for the 2003 World Puzzle Championship. The puzzle is also known as "Two Not Touch," under which name it is published in The New York Times. All puzzles in the app are created by brennerd.
