Syekh Nawawi al-Bantani is a multi-disciplinary scholar. The hundreds of works he has written in various disciplines are more than enough to prove that. Another indisputable evidence, and this is more than sufficient, is that he was called by the scholars of the cities of Mecca and Medina at that time as Sayyid 'Ulama' al-Hijaz. Sufism is no exception, Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani besides having written several works in this field of science, he is also a practitioner in it, therefore he is a comprehensive figure in translating knowledge into Islamic teachings as well as their values, or with another term al-Jâmi' Bayn al-'Ilm Wa al-'Amal.
One of Syekh Nawawi's phenomenal works in Sufism is Salâlim al-Fudlala' Syarh Manzhumah Hidayah al-Adzkiya'. Almost all of what has been written by al-Sarraj in al-Luma' regarding various definitions of Sufism teachings has been summarized in this book of Salalim al-Fudlala'. His other work which is also popular, and even studied by almost all Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia, is Nasha-ih al-'Ibad Syarh al-Munabbihat 'Ala al-Isti'dad li Yawm al-Ma'ad. A work that truly contains pure Sufism that aims to improve morals (Ishlah Ahwal al-Qulub), both morals towards Allah, His Messenger, and towards others.
One of Syekh Nawawi's other great works is in the field of interpretation, namely Marah Labîd which is also known as Tafsir al-Nawawi or al-Tafsir al-Munir Li Ma'alim al-Tanzil. Looking at the main theme in which this book was written, also looking at his references in compiling this book; especially the hasyiyah Tafsir al-Jalalayn or Tafsir al-Jamal, Mafatih Al-Ghaib, Tafsir Abi al-Su'ud, and Tafsir al-Siraj al-Munir by Shams al-Din ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Syarbini, it is clear that the interpretation Marah Labid is a book of exegesis that aims to reveal the contents of the Qur'an, not as a pure book of Sufism. However, in this paper we will examine whether there is a possibility that the teachings of Sufism are included in the book of interpretations of Marâh Labid? Is there a correlation between Syekh Nawawi's notes in Salalim al-Fudlala' and Marâh Labid's interpretation? The results of this analysis are expected to be able to conclude whether there is an interpretation of Marah Labid as a Sufism style commentary or not.
