Surat al-Mulk is a Meccan surah, from al-Mufassal, its verses 30, and its arrangement in the Qur’an is 67, and it is the first surah in the twenty-ninth part, and it is also called Surat Al-Tabarak and Surat Al-Manjiah. It was revealed after Surat Al-Tur.

The name of Surat Al-Mulk

Ibn Ashour said:

The Prophet called it “Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the Dominion” [Al-Mulk: 1] in a hadith narrated by Al-Tirmidhi on the authority of Abu Huraira on the authority of the Prophet that “A Surah of the Qur’an thirty verses interceded for a man until I forgave him, and it is Surah “Blessed be the One who is the King”: This is a naming of the surah with the first sentence that occurred in it, so it is a naming of a sentence, as Thabit ibn Jaber called “Attain evil.”

Is Surat Al-Mulk Makki or Madani?

Ibn al-Dharis, al-Bukhari, Ibn Mardawayh and al-Bayhaqi have included on the authority of Ibn Abbas what he said: It was revealed in Mecca (“Blessed be He” [Al-Malik:1] “Al-Mulk” [Al-Malik:1]).

Ibn Jarir included in his interpretation on the authority of Ad-Dahhak on the authority of Ibn Abbas what he said: “Blessed be the king” [Al-Malik:1]) about the people of Makkah except three verses.

Ibn Ashour said: It is Meccan. Ibn Atiyah and al-Qurtubi said: By consensus of all, it is possible that al-Dahhak meant an exception to three verses revealed in Medina. The people of Makkah - I said: I mean, it was revealed about people other than the people of Makkah, even if its rulings were general - and in both cases, he did not specify these three verses, and there are not three verses in the surah that are not related to the polytheists in particular. The surah to his saying: “The torment of the Blaze” [Al-Mulk: 5] He also said in Al-Itqan: “There is a strange saying in it” that he did not cherish, “that all the surah is civil.” It is the seventy-sixth in the number of the surahs revealed after Surat Al-Muminin and before Surat Al-Haqqah, and it is the number of thirty-one for the people of Hijaz and thirty-one among others, and commentators believe that it was revealed in the middle of the Meccan era.
