Turkey is a Eurasian country that occupies the entire Anatolian peninsula, in the far west of

Asia, and extends into Eastern Thrace (also known as Rumelia), in southeastern Europe. It

is one of six independent states whose population is mostly Turkish. It borders eight

countries: to the northwest with Bulgaria, to the west with Greece, to the northeast with

Georgia, Armenia and the Nakhchivan exclave of Azerbaijan, to the east with Iran and to the

southeast with Iraq and Syria. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are located to the south,

the Aegean Sea to the southwest-west and the Black Sea to the north. The Sea of Marmara,

the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles (which together form the Turkish Straits) demarcate the

border between Thrace and Anatolia and separate Europe from Asia.
