Russian literary and art journal for the publication of translated literature
Foreign Literature (IL) is a Russian literary and artistic magazine specializing in the publication of translated literature. The journal was founded in July 1955 and is currently registered as an Autonomous Non-Profit Organization.
The journal "Foreign Literature" once opened to its readers John Updike, Jerome D. Salinger, Kenzaburo Oe, Jean-Paul Sartre, Franz Kafka, Evelyn Waugh, Umberto Eco, Julio Cortazar, Milorad Pavic and many, many others. Joseph Brodsky once called "Inostranka" "a window to Europe, America, Asia, Africa and in general to all hemispheres."
At present, having ceased to be the only source of information about foreign literature, the journal continues to play the role of a professional expert publication, invariably maintaining the high quality of translations and editing. Foreign prose and poetry, essays and essays, documentary prose, letters and memoirs, articles and interviews, laureates of the Nobel, Booker, Goncourt prizes and rising stars - all this in Russian for the first time, in translations of the best Russian translators. The motto of the magazine is “Get to know tomorrow's classics!”
For several years the magazine has been working on a new project - thematic issues. During the year, several issues are dedicated either to the literature of a country, or to a significant event in history or literature. The project helps to see how huge and amazing our planet is, what different cultures have emerged on it in the history of mankind, how we are all different and at the same time similar - people speak different languages, but talk about eternal feelings - love, suffering, fear and joy ...
