Digital Fish Science 1.4

The Digital Fish Science application is a fantastic tool for Fishery Managers, Fish Biologists, Fishing Monitors and Researchers who wish to measure and characterize a large number of fish.

The DFS application from Big Fin Scientific connects wirelessly (via Bluetooth) to all of your equipment, such as Fish-Measurement Boards, Calipers, Scales, PIT-tag readers, Bar-code scanners and Printers, seamlessly aggregating their data to provide a single point for gathering and storing all of your fish-study data. If your equipment doesn't offer Bluetooth connectivity off-the-shelf, we have a way to connect your peripherals by Bluetooth; please contact us with your questions.

How the Application works:

The application is organized into "studies" and within those studies, fish-data is recorded by individual specimens ("fish-records") OR as batches of fish. At the end of your study, fish data is easily retrieved from the Android device to a PC. Archive-ready "study packages" are easily generated and saved to a server or PC. Study settings files can be shared across organizations and used as templates, eliminating repetitive data-entry.

While you're taking data, all of the study and fish data are kept in a redundantly-stored database (primary + SD-card), for safe-keeping. Paper records are prone to loss or destruction by water or handling, while redundantly stored digital records are near indestructible.

Real-time visualization of fish-records is provided in histogram and study-summary views.

The Hardware:

Big Fin Scientific provides fish-measurement hardware, which works seamlessly with the DFS application. The DFS fish-measurement "Fish-Boards" from Big Fin Scientific are waterproof to IP67 standards, ruggedized for a life on a boat or in the outdoors. The boards provide for better than 1mm length-measurement accuracy and a data-entry method other than the tablet touch-panel. Salt-water, fresh-water, fish-slime and other grime do not affect the Big Fin DFS boards.
