COUNTS WHEN YOU DON'T

Your phone has a dedicated step sensor that keeps counting even when the screen is off and the app is closed. Step Counter reads that sensor rather than trying to count on its own, so closing the app costs you nothing and your daily total stays right.

Open it after a long walk and the steps are already there.

BUILT TO BE ACCURATE

• Steps come from your phone's hardware sensor, not from guesswork

• Calories use the ACSM metabolic equations with a Mifflin-St Jeor resting rate, based on your height, weight, age and sex — not a one-size-fits-all formula

• Pace is measured over the minutes you were genuinely walking, so idle time never inflates it

• Every estimate is labelled as an estimate, because distance and calories are calculated, not measured

UNITS THAT MATCH HOW YOU THINK

Most apps give you one metric-or-imperial switch. This one lets you set each measurement separately:

• Distance in kilometres or miles

• Height in centimetres or feet and inches

• Weight in kilograms, pounds or stones

• Energy in calories or kilojoules

So you can have miles with kilograms, or kilometres with stones, without doing arithmetic in your head.

A colourful, dimensional interface with a live progress ring, sculpted icons and a background that shifts as you move through the app. Full dark and light themes, and a reduce-motion setting if you prefer things still.

YOUR STEPS STAY ON YOUR PHONE

Your step history, goal, height, weight and age are stored only on your phone and are never sent to us.

To fix bugs and improve the app, Step Counter sends crash reports and usage statistics through Google Firebase. They describe the app and your device — never your steps or your body — and each one can be switched off in Profile → Privacy.

Step Counter is free and shows a few ads from Google AdMob. Ads never receive your steps or body details.

You can delete a single day, or erase everything and start counting fresh, whenever you like.

PERMISSIONS

• Physical activity — required, to read your phone's step sensor. This is not location and does not track where you go.

• Notifications — to show your live count while counting in the background, goal alerts and occasional news

• Battery and precise timing — optional, they keep background counting on time
