Jataka is the words and stories of Lord Buddha's past many births. According to Buddhists, one cannot become Samyakbuddha by mere karma. Lord Buddha was born on earth as a bodhisattva as an animal, bird, human, deity etc. for millions of years. In all these births he perfected his character by performing charity, friendship, non-violence, philanthropy etc. After being born again and again and purifying oneself, one finally becomes a 'Buddha' or 'Sage'. These previous births of Lord Buddha are called 'Bodhisattva-births'. Buddhists call this state Abhisambuddhavastha. In this state, the Buddha could remember all his past births by attaining national consciousness. Later he used to preach these words to the disciples and improve their character.
