About BJJ 101 Volume 1
Structured and highly informative Brazilian Jiu Jitsu articles and videos!
Filmed in 1998, this video started it all! Started what, you ask? Up until that point in time, instruction in Gracie/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu had been a hodgepodge of preferred techniques presented by the instructor that led class. Not long after this instructional VHS tape was made, a host of BJJ 101 classes began to spring up all over the country. Plus, the terminology used in this instructional began to be used by many other BJJ instructors!
What made this instructional stand out from the others was the idea that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu could be taught in a structured manner. Now when I say “structured manner” I am not referring to someone who organizes a bunch of “somewhat related” techniques into a conglomeration and then calls it “structured.” What I am referring to is having a specific set of guidelines, principles, formulas, movements, techniques, combinations, and drills that form a cohesive unit and point a student down a specific path - like teaching a student how to count and then moving him or her on to arithmetic, decimals and fractions, and then algebra.
So if you’re looking to build a solid foundation in your Jiu Jitsu training, this instructional app is a great place to start!
The first video lays down some important guidelines, principles, and formulas to follow. It also introduces you to a roadmap to follow for training!
The second video focuses on some basic front mount escapes as well as a few unique ones.
The third video focuses on the basics of guard passing - an extremely important area in Jiu Jitsu training.
The fourth video focuses on a few basic side mount escapes as well as an interesting sacrificial escape.
The fifth video focuses on escaping from headlocks, the wrestler’s cradle, and kesa gatame (the scarf hold). These escapes are important for people with no Jiu Jitsu experience as well as people with similar grappling experience.
The sixth video focuses on combination and drill training.
The seventh video gives you a few extra instructional techniques on guard passing, front and “S” mount escapes.
The eighth video shows you three grappling matches at tournaments.
In addition to each video, I have included two written articles:
1. BJJ 101 in Review and Extras. This article provides you with a comprehensive view of each video. More information is contained in this article than the original instructional.
2. BJJ 101 Training Progression. This article will teach you a four-step training method to help you develop usable, repeatable, and measurable skill sets over time.
When the videos and articles are combined, you will definitely experience a positive difference in your Jiu Jitsu skills in just a matter of weeks!
