Developing Theory of Mind and social skills for children with autism
AutisMIND is an educational tool designed for therapists, psychologists, speech and language therapists, teachers, parents, and other professionals working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Children with autism may experience and process social information differently. This can sometimes make it more difficult to understand what other people are thinking, feeling, knowing, or intending, as well as to interpret social situations and respond appropriately. AutisMIND provides a structured and motivating way to practice these skills through interactive activities.
AutisMIND includes 10 different areas, divided into 6 levels of difficulty, with more than 1,000 exercises targeting different skills related to social cognition and Theory of Mind.
The activities are designed to be completed together with an adult, who can guide the child, provide support, and use the exercises as a starting point for discussion and learning.
Key features:
1.Simple and intuitive interface: the app is designed to be easy to navigate, with clear instructions and a simple visual presentation that allows children to focus on the activity.
2. Positive feedback and reinforcement: children receive immediate feedback after each response. Visual and verbal reinforcement makes the activities more engaging and helps maintain motivation. Children can choose from 5 different rewards, with rewards becoming progressively more valuable as they complete exercises.
3. Adaptable settings: adults can personalize different aspects of the experience according to the child's needs and preferences, including the progress bar, sounds, music, and reward system.
4. Learning without mistakes: when a child gives an incorrect answer, the app provides support to help them understand the task and reach the correct response. This approach reduces unnecessary frustration while turning mistakes into learning opportunities. After further practice, previously incorrect exercises are presented again without assistance, allowing the child to demonstrate what they have learned.
5. Progress and performance data: AutisMIND automatically records activity data that can be reviewed in the statistics section. Adults can monitor aspects such as response times, time spent at each level, completed exercises, and errors. This information can help professionals and families follow the child's progress over time.
6. Pictograms and real photographs: Activities use both simple illustrations and real photographs. Drawings can make situations easier to understand by reducing unnecessary visual information, while photographs introduce more realistic and detailed social situations that can support the generalization of learned skills.
7. Developed by an interdisciplinary autism team: AutisMIND was developed by a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, speech and language therapists, teachers, and medical professionals from IDAPP, an autism assessment and intervention center in Barcelona, Spain.
The development of AutisMIND has also involved the collaboration of children, young people, and their families. Their experiences and feedback have been an essential part of designing and improving the app.
AutisMIND is designed to support learning and intervention alongside an adult. It does not replace professional assessment or intervention.
