👳‍♂️ About the Poet : Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (1689–1752), a revered saint, scholar, mystic, and poet, was born in Hala Haveli, Sindh. A descendant of Syeds from Herat, his early education began at Akhund Noor Muhammad Bhatti’s madressah, where he gained deep knowledge of the Quran, Hadith, and multiple languages including Sindhi, Persian, Sanskrit, and more. A lifelong seeker of truth, Shah undertook spiritual travels across Sindh, Balochistan, Rajasthan, and beyond, gathering the inspiration that shaped his timeless poetry.

He believed in introspection over wanderings and embraced love as the path to divine union. Profoundly influenced by Sufi orders like Qadri, Chishti, and Suhrawardi, he expressed the philosophy of Wahdat-ul-Wujood (Oneness of Being) with such grace that it faced no opposition. Shah married Bibi Saidah Begum, but remained childless. After her death, he chose not to remarry.

Settling on the Bhit (sandy mound) in 1742, Shah lived a life of simplicity, music, and deep devotion. His poetry emphasized spiritual love, social justice, human equality, and harmony among all. Though rooted in Sunni beliefs, he respected all Islamic traditions, embodying unity rather than division. When asked whether he was Sunni or Shia, he replied, “I am between the two.”

On 14 Safar 1165 A.H. (1752 A.D.), Shah passed away while listening to music, wrapped in a cloth, in a state of spiritual bliss. He was laid to rest on Bhit, where his grand mausoleum was later built by Miyan Ghulam Shah Kalhoro and later restored by Talpur rulers. Shah Abdul Latif’s Risalo remains a beacon of Sindhi literature, spirituality, and universal love.
